About the Event

Currently, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services manages 54 USGS flood sensors across Mecklenburg County measuring the depth of the water in our streams.

Storm Water Services and the Department of Homeland Security are working together to test low-cost flood sensors. Three companies have delivered 25 prototypes of the new low-cost flood sensors for Storm Water to test for accuracy, performance and reliability. The goal of the project is to place more flood sensors across the County, state and country in an effort to reduce deaths due to flooding. These low-cost sensors will ultimately have the capability to directly warn the public of local flooding through smart phones, home devices and directly to a car's computer system.
